Information about School Policies and Procedures

The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. for grades 1 to 6. Kindergarten hours
vary depending on whether AM or PM. Morning Kindergarten hours are 8:45 - 12:32 p.m. Afternoon Kindergarten hours are 11:10 - 2:57 p.m. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE FOR SCHOOL AFTER 8:15 A.M. No supervision is provided prior to 8:15 a.m.. Parents are responsible for their children prior to this time. Teacher supervision begins at 8:30 a.m. The breakfast program opens at 8:15 a.m. and a supervisor is present to watch students.


EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS MUST BE PROVIDED. Please notify the school of any changes.
** Only persons listed on the student's emergency card will be permitted to pick up children. They must have a photo ID to show when picking up a student.


Students will be released only to persons listed on the child's emergency card. If a parent has not given us prior notification to release their child, the child will not be released to any adult. Adults must have a photo ID to show when picking up a student.


In the event of illness or accident during school hours, parents will be contacted using the numbers provided on the emergency card. If the school is unable to contact parents, other persons listed on your child's emergency card will be contacted. Please be sure the emergency card is updated.

If your child feels ill in the morning, please do not send him/her to school, especially if he/she has a fever.

Students with a contagious or infectious disease should be kept at home for their own and other's protection. The school should be notified if a child contracts a communicable disease. Admittance to school is dependent upon state law. Please contact the school office if you need additional information.

If your child has a special health problem, please contact the school nurse or health clerk by calling 739-5645 and leaving a message.

INFORMATION REGARDING THE FEDERAL LAW "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" AND TRUANTS: Students going out of town or on vacation are to be marked as truant under the "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) federal law. Parents are strongly encouraged to request and have their child do the assignments given under an Independent Study. (Independent Studies are only available from periods of 5 to 10 days.) Requests for an Independent Study must be made at least five (5) school days prior to the child leaving. Credit for the missed school days is only permissible after assigned work has been turned in by the deadline. A truant indicates a violation of the laws requiring children be at school everyday their track is in session.

Our school district is required under NCLB to monitor student attendance, notify parents of excessive absences, tardies, and truants, and to follow prescribed procedures (School Attendance Review Team, School Attendance Review Board, referral to Riverside District Attorney's office) regarding attendance.

Ben Franklin School has adopted "Timelines for Learning" which assist in monitoring student academic progress. You should be aware and keep informed of these Timelines for your child.

Ben Franklin School also has a "Parents are Responsible" program. This program is focused on keeping parents informed of their child's academic and social development. It also requires the school staff team to notify parents and keep a permanent record when a child is not meeting one or more of the Timelines for Learning. A parent's involvement in their child's education is extremely important to your child's success. The program requires parents of new students to meet with their child's new teacher within 10 days of enrollment.

Classroom teachers may determine whether they wish to use parent helpers in their classrooms. A teacher desiring to schedule parent helpers must designate the time and day helpers may come to their classroom. Parents desiring to help in classrooms need to make arrangement with their child's teacher prior to the day of helping need to follow procedures outlined under "Visitors to School" listed in section above. A volunteer application must be completed and filed in the front office. As of January 2008, the Riverside County Health Department has required volunteers assisting at a school on a weekly basis to obtain a Tuberculosis (TB) test. This test is at the expense of the volunteer. Volunteers are required to present TB test results to school office personnel. Preschool children and/or off-track minors may not accompany parent visitors or helpers to our school due to safety and instructional time issues. Parents may bring young children or off-track minors to awards assemblies or class presentations or plays to see siblings recognized or perform.


Early release days are scheduled every Wednesday and school dismisses at 1:57 pm. Children need to be picked up immediately after school gets out as all staff members attend collaborative instructional meetings to allow teachers time to plan quality instruction.

Minimum days are listed on the calendar. Please mark your calendar. Dismissal on a minimum day is at 12:32 p.m. On minimum days all kindergarten classes will attend in the morning.

Instructional minutes are very important to our students at Ben Franklin School. Interruptions to classrooms are held to a minimum to provide students the greatest opportunity of uninterrupted learning time.

Telephone messages or items from parents are delivered to classrooms only at 11:30 and 2:30 each day. The office tries to avoid interrupting classes; therefore, a runner takes all messages or items to classes at 11:30 and again at 2:30. If you need a message to get to your child, please call by 2:15 PM. We are unable to get messages to students from 2:30 to the end of school. It is best for parents to make plans with their child ahead of time or call our office prior to 2:15 to have the message delivered. (Delivery of messages on Early Dismissal Wednesdays will be at 1:30. Call in prior to 12:45 for delivery.)

Students may not use the office or classroom telephones unless it is an emergency. It is the student's responsibility to bring homework, lunch, or lunch money to school each day. Phone calls will not be permitted if forgotten.

Personal articles (toys, iPods, radios, pets, permanent markers, etc.) should remain at home unless prior written permission from their teacher is given.

If it is necessary for a parent or person listed on a child's emergency card to sign out a child during school hours, the person will be required to sign the log in the office, show photo identification (if staff does not recognize the individual as a parent or person listed on the child's emergency card) before your child will be called from class to the office. Students will not be called to the office prior to parent or individual's arrival. Please make arrangements to arrive early enough for the sign-out process and still be able to make your appointment. Keep in mind, that depending on the time of day, students may need to be found on the playground if it is their recess or lunch time. Students will not be signed out after 2:30 pm.  This period at the end of the day is critical to teachers as it permits them to recap the day, answer final questions students may have about homework items or materials needed for the next day. Students will be signed out only to persons listed on the student's emergency card.

Prior to the start of school and at the end of the school day, parents should pick up students within the parking lot by entering the lot using the right hand side of the entrance and proceed in line until the area along the sidewalk. Pull as far forward as possible to pick up your child and allow as may vehicles as possible to pick up their children.

Parents may also enter the parking lot prior to or after school using the left hand side of the entrance and proceed to a parking space. Use the crosswalk with the parking lot to safely cross traffic moving through the lot.

The parking lot will become very congested each morning with parents dropping their children off at school. This will also be true at the conclusion of the school day as parents come to pick up students. Two things can aid in making drop off and pick up easier. They are:

1. Drop off students between 8:25 a.m. and 8:40 a.m.
2. Pick up students after 2:57 p.m.

Please remember that the curb in our parking lot is for drop-off/pick-up of students. Please remain in your vehicle while waiting for your child. Always use the crosswalk when you have parked your vehicle.

Ben Franklin School has worked closely with the Corona Police Department and Corona Streets Division to provide the best system possible. Having a large number of vehicles entering and exiting our parking lot each morning and afternoon does make it crowded and driver patience is appreciated. All traffic laws, including signage and street markings, are to be followed and will be enforced by the Corona Police Department.

Licensed Daycare Vehicles (LDV) should park in the front bus loop. All Licensed Daycares wishing to use this area must have a placard of at least 1' x 2' on the driver's side indicating the name of the daycare and phone number. The daycare must be licensed with the state of California to use this area.

If the LDV area is full with other daycare vehicles, the newly arriving daycare vehicle must exit the parking lot and re-enter until a space opens along the LDV area. This is done to avoid blocking parents from exiting the parking lot.

Please review the safest route to school with your children. Children are expected to practice good citizenship and obey school rules on the way to and from school. Students must use sidewalks and crosswalks.

Students may ride bikes to school if they have a Ben Franklin School bike license. This license can be obtained by contacting the school's office and the child passing a simple test on bike safety. The bike license must be on their bike at all times when it is at school. A bike cage is located behind Independence Hall. Students are responsible for locking their bikes. The bike cage is not locked.

California law requires children to wear a bicycle helmet when riding a bicycle. This law may be enforced by school personnel for students riding a bike to and from school. Our policy is to detain the child and have them call their parent for a helmet. If no helmet is brought to school by the parent, the child may be required to walk home. Parent would then pick up bicycle later in the day, or the child could bring a helmet the next day.

District policy and City of Corona ordinances prohibit students from riding roller blades or skateboards to school. Riding skateboards and roller blades during after school hours is not permitted by ordinance.

Ben Franklin School serves lunch to students at the school's Philly Café. Students may either pay for lunch or breakfast on a daily basis or prepay. Prepaying is a very easy method and may be done for a few days, months, or a year. To learn more, contact the school's Philly Café manager.

Checks may be written to pay for lunch, lost books, and other items. However, if a bad check is received, it will be resubmitted to the bank a second time. If it is still bad, it will be referred to the Riverside County District Attorney's office. There is a large fine imposed on the check writer by the DA's office (about $140) for processing. Please be sure that funds are available in your account for all checks written.

Animals/Pets may be escorted onto campus by an adult when tied to the Standards and supporting current instruction. A teacher must gain approval of an administrator for an animal to enter campus. If approval is granted, an adult must escort the pet/animal onto school grounds on a leash or in an enclosure. The handler must remain with the animal at all times. The animal may remain on campus for no longer than 30 minutes. Law enforcement animals are permitted on campus with administrator approval.

City code does not permitted pets onto any school grounds at any time unless approved by school administrators.

Fish may be approved by an administrator to remain in classrooms.

Weapons and drugs are not permitted on school grounds at any time. Students may not possess these items while coming to school or returning home after school. Students found in possession of such items will be suspended pending an expulsion hearing. The Corona Police Department will also be called.

Should a student find or discover they have brought a knife or dangerous object to school, he/she should turn it into a teacher or the office immediately. He/She will not get into trouble.

If you move during the school year, please notify the school prior to your move. This helps our secretarial staff prepare the necessary paperwork for shipment to your child's new school.

All students participating on school field trips must have a completed, signed field trip permission slip. Students going on the school field trip must remain with the class or classes attending from the time they leave school until their return. Students are required to ride on district/school provided transportation to and from the field trip location to be considered part of the field trip. Any child not present for the taking of attendance or who is signed out from school, is the responsibility of their parent. Students not present for attendance or signed out from school are not part of a school field trip but are members of the public if they should arrive at the same location as the field trip students. All field trips are planned to enhance the instructional program based on the state Standards. Any child having medical concerns attending a field trip should discuss these with the teacher prior to the field trip. Parent chaperones are not permitted to bring other persons (preschool children, off-track students, older children on vacation or out of school) because the parent chaperone has the responsibility of monitoring students of the class participating on the field trip.
